Local Ohio Phone Company Thrives With Old-fashioned, Cutting-edge Leadership, VOIP Technology and Innovative Products

In 1899, Mr. Alexander Stepfield started Ohio.net's parent company, Doylestown Telephone Company, with a switchboard and 3 employees. More than 100 years later, Thomas Brockman, president of Doylestown Telephone (Ohio.net), and spouse of Mr. Stepfield's great-grand daughter, is transforming the rural phone company into an industry leader in the evolving field of Internet technology.

Out of approximately 900 independent Ohio phone companies that existed in 1940, Ohio.net remains as one of only 34 today.

Until 11 years, ago, the Doylestown Telephone Company provided only phone services to its customers. After starting Bright.net and subsequently purchasing Ohio.net Internet Providers, Brockman began to feel the need to diversify. "In 1996 when we decided to add the Internet, no one knew what the Internet was!" explains Brockman. "We recognized that dial-up Internet service wasn't going anywhere. We launched into ISP through broadband connections." As a result, Ohio.net's business boomed.

John Clarke, general manager, credits Ohio.net's tremendous growth to listening and responding to the needs of their customers. "We have consistently rolled out a new product every year and it has never been about the latest technology," Clarke said. "It's about how people are using it."

During the Internet boom in the late 1990s, Clarke and his team held fast to a theory to which he credits the company's success. "Our product selection has been focused on making companies more efficient," he said. Ohio.net has been among the first in Northeast Ohio to embrace technologies such as DSL, in-depth Internet security products and e-mail.
