And the Survey Says: You Know Nothing About Cell Phone Manufacturers

A recent survey of U.S. college students, the largest users of cell phones in the world, has discovered an interesting fact: Over 90% of students don't know anything about their cell phone's manufacturer. While not exactly an earth-shaking revelation, you'd think that students would be experts on their most used possesion. If this is not the case, then some correction is in order. In this article, we'll briefly take a look at some of the history of cell phone makers and a couple of their most popular phones.

While the cell phone in your pocket may ring with the latest ringtone or allow you to take picture-perfect snapshots of family and friends, plenty of interesting tidbits of information may help you better understand the manufacturer of your cell phone. When it comes to the mobile communication that has easily become an essential lifeline for many, there is much more than LCD screens, metal and plastic that go into the production of a cell phone. Countless hours of imaginative brainstorming, creative design meetings, and a reputation for crossing the boundaries of technology surround the three main manufacturers of cell phones ? Motorola, Samsung and Nokia.

Motorola

Before there was Motorola, there was the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in 1928. It wasn?t until 1947 that "Motorola" became the official name of the company after being used as its trademark since the 1930s. Founders Paul and Joe Galvin dreamed up the name Motorola when the business focused on producing car radios. At that time, it was customary in the U.S. to utilize the "-ola" suffix to refer to audio equipment. So, the name Motor-ola seemed a natural. The initial pursuits of Motorola also involved the manufacturing of radio-related products, such as the world's first walkie-talkie. Before Motorola became a U.S. household name, the company had established a strong foothold in the world of computer chips, digital cable boxes and modems.

While a multitude of Motorola cell phones decorate the market, there are a few models that stand out from the rest, capturing a widespread response from the public. The Motorola RAZR V3 is convenient in size, but still offers satisfying MPEG4 video playback, video capture, Bluetooth and digital camera capabilities. Another great selection from Motorola is the newer ROKR, which allows users to play, sort, store and maintain music on their very own iTunes Digital Jukebox. Additional features include multimedia messaging, a VGA camera with 4x digital zoom and pre-installed extended memory.

Samsung

When you consider products created by the Samsung Group, you probably would have never guessed the company name translates into "three stars." It is Samsung Electronics (founded in 1969) that falls under the larger umbrella of the South Korean corporation with a history that begins in 1938. Today, the company is known as one of the largest electronics manufacturing companies in the world. The company name has become associated with top quality refrigerators, plasma televisions and flash memory, among many other things.

The Samsung Helio Heat is a popular cell phone on the market, offering a jam-packed bundle of online features, including access to an array of social sites, such as Digg, MySpace, Google Maps, and Wikipedia. With attractive black or gold colors, the slider-type design is perfect for fashionable students. The touch sensitive screen also encourages easy-access control use. The Samsung Blackjack is also making waves with its slimmer body and above-average video quality. Decently executed photos with good color also add to the allure of a mobile unit that delivers easy navigation.

Nokia

While the Nokia Corporation sounds like a company straight out of Japan, this worldwide cell phone manufacturer is actually a Helsinki, Finland venture. With a stronghold on the overall market, Nokia possesses a deep company history that begins in 1865. Despite a ton of mobile phone selections on the market, Nokia still accounts for about 36% of the global piece of the pie. With an exceptional understanding of what consumers look for in a cell phone (in terms of design, price and function), Nokia continues to blow the competition out of the water.

When looking at some of the more popular Nokia brands, one sees that the N73 has a 3.2-megapixel camera with video-recording technology, integrated music player, Bluetooth and a dazzling screen. The phone also accommodates users looking for extra-long talk time and battery life. The Nokia 6288 is another popular choice that comes with a bundled 512 mini-SD card, Bluetooth capabilities and further improvements that branch off from previous models.

Well, how does it feel to be on the other side of the 90%? Now you know more about cell phone manufacturers than the great majority of the leading demographic group that use them. Cell phones are here to stay, as the newest and latest technology continues to evolve with advanced capabilities beyond our wildest imagination. Whether it is sending an email, downloading a new game, or sending a picture message to loved ones at home, knowing a little about your cell phone's manufacturer may help in choosing the right cell phone for you.
