How to Plan for A Training Seminar

You've got a great training session set up, and you've got some really awesome speakers coming. You're pretty sure that you've got everything scheduled and set up, right? It's often a good idea to make yourself up a checklist and go through it.

Unless you've made some provisions for keeping yourself and the participants awake, paying attention, and reasonably enthusiastic, you'll quickly be sunk. Why are the participants going to pay attention instead of practicing their napping skills? This is especially important if you're footing the bill for the seminar.

First off, make sure the temperature is about normal. A little chilly is better than too warm, but the closer you can get to normal, the better. Too warm will inevitably put people to sleep, but super chilly makes people huddle up and get distracted.

Second, supply high sugar snacks and kiss productivity goodbye the rest of the day. If you just want everybody to be energetic for the presentation, and you don't care about sugar-crashing for the next two hours, go nuts. However, if you want everybody to still be energetic for the rest of the day, go with complex carbohydrates like pretzels or savory snacks. The activity of eating makes people more alert in and of itself, but watch what you serve.

Then, the next point is about seating. If you use hard plastic chairs, everybody will be so distracted that they won't be able to pay attention. If the chairs are too comfy, you might also have problems. Folding chairs are pretty standard, and usually work well, but do look around for the best option. If you have training seminars on a regular basis, you might want to invest in promotional folding chairs with the company logo on them.

Last, of course, you want to make sure that the speaker is good at speaking. A boring trainer who goes on and on will fail every time, and nothing can fix such a problem. Therefore, be prepared to critique the training yourself and to get feedback from your other participants. And have fun!
